First Steps is Derbyshire’s only eating disorder charity. We are partially funded by Derbyshire Children and Young People’s services. We deliver support to people living in Derbyshire who are affected by eating difficulties and disorders; this includes parents, partners and families. First Steps website is at: www.firststepsderby.co.uk
First Steps staff are trained by Dove and B-eat (the UK’s largest National eating disorder charity) to deliver one hour educational workshops to young people of all ages that aim to give pupils the tools to build positive self-esteem. The sessions can be delivered to both girls and boys together and can provide a platform for group discussion on the image-related concerns that affect all young people in today’s society.
About the Dove Self Esteem Programme.
Many young people develop low self-esteem from hang-ups about looks and, consequently, fail to reach their full potential in later life. The work carried out by the Dove Self-Esteem Programme and B-eat is
focused specifically on preventative work, aiming to help strengthen body confidence. They have created the Self-Esteem Workshop, an educational workshop for 11-14 year olds that aims to give pupils the tools to build positive self-esteem and provide a platform for group discussion on image-related concerns.
There are at least 1.6 million people in the UK and over 50,000 people in Derbyshire directly affected by an eating disorder. Young people between 14 and 25 years old are at greatest risk. Approximately 20% of those who become seriously ill may die prematurely.
So by helping our young people to grow up with body confidence equips them with an important skill for life.
“I just wanted to say a proper thank you to Danielle at First Steps for coming in and talking to Year 12’s on body image and self esteem. It was one of the best sessions that we have been involved in and has been really useful.” (Head of Year 12, St Benedict’s RC School, Darley Abbey, Derby)
“First Steps Derbyshire has provide a number of presentations about Eating Disorders, Body Image and the service they offer to people with eating difficulties and disorders. The students were made to feel comfortable very quickly, due to the informal style, which was evident by their feedback and questioning. The sessions were clear, well informed and of a high professional standard. I would highly recommend First Steps Derbyshire as the preferred service to deliver any related sessions to schools and colleges. The staff shared their experiences too when appropriate, which provided an account beyond what anyone could ever read in a text book! The staff provided a superb visual display about eating disorders and body image, engaging activities and clear, informative handouts.” (Learning Director, Derby College, Derby)
