The Big Lottery Fund East Midlands team would like to invite you to one of our free briefings taking place in your local area. Do you know of a community group that would like to deliver a community project or celebration event this summer to support the torch relay or 2012 games? The Big Lottery Fund in partnership with a range of local organisations are delivering their own Torch Relay across the East Midlands in February for community groups wanting to deliver community, environmental, educational or health projects to link in with the games or Torch Relay.

The briefings will provide information about Awards for All and other small funding opportunities to help you celebrate the games as well as informing you how you could be part of the Breath of Fresh Air strand of the East Midlands Cultural Olympiad. Find out what makes a successful application and what types of projects we could potentially fund.

Suicide is a problem for society as a whole. To increase awareness – and to help remove the stigma which can be a barrier for those in need of help – this FREE half-day training seminar should be of interest to anyone who wishes to:

• Examine their own attitudes
• Find out (and challenge) the myths that surround suicide
• Discover the likely suicide risk factors and warning signs
• Find out how you might help someone at risk of suicide and self harm
• Take advantage of a great networking opportunity

The training is open to everyone; the general public as well as those whose work is more likely to bring them into contact with people at greater risk of suicide and self harm.

Demand for this training is high and places for this event are limited so advance booking is essential.

Bookings are only accepted with a completed booking form and are allocated on a first come first serve basis with priority to people living or working in Chesterfield and surrounding areas. ()N.B: Please do not be put off if you are unable to attend this seminar – the training will be held at various locations throughout Derbyshire until June 2012).

Do you have an interest in local health and social care issues? Do you work or volunteer with a local group which provides health or social care activities? Do you care about the health and wellbeing of your local community? Then these meetings are for you!

The Southern Derbyshire Health & Social Care Forum covers the four Derbyshire Districts of Amber Valley, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash and South Derbyshire. The meetings are held quarterly and the Districts take turns to host them.

The meetings provide an important opportunity for representatives from local voluntary and community groups to discuss health and social care issues and influence service planning with statutory agencies, such as Derbyshire County Council and NHS Derbyshire County.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st February 2012 at St Oswald’s Church Hall in Ashbourne from 10am until 1.30pm including free light refreshments and lunch. Group representatives from the South Derbyshire area will be most welcome.

At the meeting on 1st February, officers from Derbyshire County Council will be there to talk about setting up HealthWatch which from April 2013 will replace the Local Involvement Networks and be the local consumer champion for patients, service users and the public. They are keen to gather the views of local people and to explore how HealthWatch might look in Derbyshire.

There will also be a presentation and discussion about how Derbyshire County Council intends to support people to continue living independent, healthy and fulfilled lives in their own homes for as long as possible. Part of this plan includes setting up a network of groups and organisations who provide befriending type services, including lunch clubs and other social activities, for older and vulnerable people. This is to help ensure that everyone in Derbyshire who needs it has access to a quality service. South Derbyshire CVS has been chosen by Derbyshire County Council to lead this work and there will be a presentation and discussion about how they intend to do this.

The Empowering the voluntary sector project has been delivering training to third sector organisations to challenge unjust decision making processes since September 2006. This project now brings together Compact Advocacy, NAVCA and the Public Law Project to deliver training together with Compact and legal advice with the aim of strengthening the relationship between voluntary and community organisations and public bodies and significantly increases opportunities to influence decisions made by public bodies.

This workshop is open to all voluntary and community organisations, staff and trustees and also open to public sector partners. It provides all the tools necessary to legally challenge the funding decisions of statutory bodies both for contracts and grants.

Creating Safer Futures save the date flyer

Protecting Children and Young People: Our Way Forward

 Friday 16th March 2012 09.10 – 15.45pm at the Post Mill Centre, South Normanton.

This free Conference organised by Derbyshire  Community Health Services NHS Trust will discuss the importance of SFH/SFC in Derbyshire, the success of the project in its first year and the way forward in 2012-2013. The Conference will provide an opportunity to discuss some of the achievements to date and provide a constructive environment for continual engagement and feedback from the wider stakeholder community and enable you to have your say and become part of this important initiative. During the course of the Conference, you will be able to listen to keynote speakers, participate in two workshops, listen to a debate and watch a performance from one of the schools involved in our SFH/SFC Schools project and talk to some of our partners at the market place.

The workshops will provide a forum for continued participation and feedback and underline the commitment of the SFH/SFC Strategy Team to a continuous improvement cycle driven through stakeholder consultation. You will also have the opportunity to meet key people involved in the implementation of Derbyshire and Derby City SFH/SFC Research Network and some of those governing the strategic direction of the implementation.
